Understanding Sexual Abuse in Childhood

Sexual abuse in childhood can have long-lasting effects on individuals, particularly among Māori and Pacific communities where cultural factors and stigma may complicate the healing process. It is essential to recognize the unique challenges these men face, including issues related to identity, cultural responsibility, and community stigma. This podcast from our friends at Zeducation

Healing from trauma is possible, and it is crucial to acknowledge that seeking help is a strength, not a weakness. We have created a series of videos using a framework called Te Ao Marama that I designed to help train you on being the best professional you can.

Activity

We encourage you to watch the Te Ao Marama videos to deepen your understanding of how to support those affected by sexual violence with empathy and care. The videos offer important insights and practical guidance for creating a supportive environment. If you have any questions or need further clarification, don't hesitate to click on the "Let's Chat" button (on PC or Mac)—our team is here to help and provide the support you need. Your willingness to learn and engage can make a meaningful difference in someone's journey toward healing.

Module Two: Te Korekore

Te Korekore is a space full of endless possibilities, where nothing exists yet, but anything can be created. It’s a place where new ideas, energy, and life can start, without any limits. From this formless state, everything that will come into being is born, ready to move into the world of light and life, Te Ao Mārama. In this realm we focus on finding a way forward. Check out the bros page and support peoples page as well as our diversity page, to find out the challenges men and their support crew face.

Module Three: Whenua

The space of whenua, or the land, represents a place of grounding and healing in the journey of recovery from sexual violence. It’s a space where individuals can reconnect with their roots, find stability, and rebuild a sense of safety and strength. Just as the land nourishes and supports life, whenua offers a foundation for renewal, growth, and resilience, helping to restore balance and restore a sense of belonging in the world. It is a place for bros to find peace, reclaim their power, and heal over time. This can start with our podcasts to listen and understand a way forward from your environment.

The realm of maramatanga, or understanding, is a space of clarity and insight in the healing journey. It’s where individuals gain a deeper awareness of their experiences, emotions, and the path to recovery. In this realm, bros can begin to make sense of their trauma, find meaning in their healing, and develop the tools needed to move forward. Maramatanga brings wisdom and self-awareness, helping people to understand their own strength, find peace with their past, and take control of their future. It is a space where healing becomes clearer and more empowered. In this section learn about three approaches called, RAVI, NIGEL and CALI

Module Five: Hapori

Hapori, or community, is a place where people support and help each other heal. It’s where individuals come together to share their experiences, offer understanding, and lift each other up. In this space, survivors of sexual violence can feel safe, cared for, and connected, knowing they are not alone. Community helps rebuild trust and encourages people to support one another through their recovery, creating a strong sense of belonging and shared strength.
